Are Bubbles Safe For Dogs To Play With? – DoggieUK9

Why are dog bubble games such a great form of enrichment for your pet?

Bubble games with dogs are a great way to get some exercise outside, and test out their skills. This is a simple game where the whole family can enjoy the patterns and colors of the soapy bubbles. Dogs can also use this time to practice their coordination and agility while having fun with the family.

Bubbles can be especially good for older dogs and dogs with arthritis as they can still stretch and move about without too much impact and stress on their joints. Same goes for you as the owner. Bubbles are a win-win for both dog and owner.

What happens if your dog eats the bubbles?  Are they at risk?

Unfortunately, some products that are classed as non-toxic may not be safe for pets. There is the risk that if dogs ingest too many bubbles, or accidentally drink the solution, they could end up with side effects like chemical burns in their mouths, upset stomachs, and other signs of gastric distress. It’s best to check the labels for chemicals just in case.

What bubble solutions are safest for pets?

The good news is that the popularity of bubbles for dogs has resulted in pet-safe bubbles and widespread availability in local pet supply shops, department stores (e.g. Target, Walmart, etc) and online. There are many flavored or scented bubbles (peanut butter, bone broth, bacon, etc)  to make it more interesting or fun. In addition, there are a variety of bubble machines for the pet parents that are tired of blowing the bubbles themselves. The machines range from $10 to $30 or more.

Homemade pet friendly bubble mixture solutions.

Making your own bubble solution is easy and can last a long time. All of these recipes are going to have some sort of dish soap in them, soap isn’t meant to be eaten and of course, any large amount of dish soap that is ingested can cause GI upset in dogs so just be a responsible dog owner and monitor your dog when they’re having bubble time. Finding a soap that has less harmful ingredients is key and also ingredients that are dog-safe so read your labels carefully.

The easiest and most common homemade dog-safe bubbles are the one that uses Dawn dish soap (1 tablespoon) or another natural, biodegradable dish detergent (1/2 cup) and water (1 cup). Added to this should be a vegetable glycerin (1 teaspoon) that can purchased at a local craft store in the cake decorating aisle. This makes the bubbles last longer. If you can’t find glycerin or don’t want to use it, you can substitute it with corn syrup or sugar. (Avoid any sweeteners with Xylitol) Flavoring can be added, like bone broth (1 teaspoon). Mix and start blowing bubbles with a straw, end of a wisk, bent paper clip or anything round.
