The Best Pet Cities In America

America’s Cities: How Do They Rank?

It is certainly no secret that the U.S. is absolutely dog crazy. According to a recent survey of pet owners, more than half of all American households have dogs. When it comes to taking care of their canine family, Americans spend an estimated average of $1,200 per year. While thexpenses can certainly add up, where you live can make your canine’s companionship that much more enjoyable – not to mention easier. With that in mind, two organizations analyzed data to identify and rank the most dog-friendly cities in the country.

  • One used 50 cities, another used 100 of the most populated cities in the US. The data analyses relied upon established and credible sources such as government reports and locally recognized city organizations that tracked information about number of dog friendly parks, restaurants, weather, pet shops and veterinary offices, and dog-friendly shopping centers.  Another factor was a dog ’walkability’ factor and one survey included ‘best state animal protection laws’ as a criterion.
  • The results of each were very close in their ranking of  the top 10 cities. The only difference worth mentioning are the cities ranked #1. One ranked Portland, Oregon and the other Tuscon, Arizona. Both were so close and worthy of praise.

Key Findings

  • Cities with the most dog parks are located in Western states. The top five cities in the study with the most dog parks include three in Western states, one in the Southwest and, in the East, two were tied. Both surveys are from 2021 as it is too early in 2022 to evaluate.
