Does your nighttime walk take you on roads with few or no street lights?
LED dog collars are becoming an important must-have item for walking your dog(s) at night. Whether you live in a city with street lights or a suburb with minimal or sparse lighting, streets or roads are generally far from well lit. The spacing of lights as well as trees, signs and other things can interfere with where the light is supposed to shine or block visibility for you, cyclists, and cars or trucks.
There are plenty of options and numerous different types of LED collars. You need to do a bit of research to find the right one for your needs. Here are a few facts to help you consider some of the options:
- Some are regular collars with D-rings for a leash, others are just light rings that are meant to be used in addition to the regular collar.
- Some require batteries, others are rechargeable. All generally describe the number of hours per charge/battery life.
- Prices range from around $12 to $30 or more. Online is the best way to check prices.
- They come in several colors, some are switchable between steady light or blinking. Some are water-proof, others not.
- There are also tiny clip-on LED lights that you clip on to a collar.
- LED leashes and harnesses are also an available option.
A number of websites have posted reviews of the “top rated” LED collars, two are worthy of note.

- Dog Lab does what their name implies and gives testing results of the over 21 LED Dog Collars evaluated. [Link]
For people, some typically carry flashlights, but there are LED bracelets, headband flashlights, glove-flashlights and clip-on LEDs. Reflective clothing is also an option. Be visible!
