New Fine Dining Restaurant Is Just for Dogs
San Francisco now has a fine-dining restaurant for dogs with $75 tasting menu.
Most fine dining establishments don’t even allow dogs indoors. But a new San Francisco restaurant exclusively caters to canines. Dogue, which opened last month in the Mission District, may be the first restaurant in the U.S. to serve an upscale tasting menu just for dogs.
Rahmi Massarweh, a professional chef trained in classic French cuisine, and his wife, Alejandra, own and operate Dogue. The couple’s four picky pups, who’ve eaten freshly prepared meals since they were small, inspired the venture.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the couple serves cuisine tailored to each patron’s needs and tastes, considering age, weight, activity level, food sensitivities, and allergies. Menu items are made with locally sourced, fresh, organic ingredients.

During the week, Dogue serves seasonal meat-based pastries made in its on-site “pawtisserie.” They also offer “dogguccinos.” On Sundays, Dogue becomes Bone Appetit Café, where dogs can dine on a $75, three-course tasting menu. Options include items like chicken-mushroom soup, green-lipped mussels with fermented carrots and wheatgrass, or squid tentacles and ink.
The eatery also provides take-home meals, with the same raw, locally sourced ingredients.

Do San Franciscans Have More Dogs or Children?
You see them everywhere in San Francisco: luxury doggy daycares and hotels, dog gyms, dog spas, even dog bakeries. It’s pretty clear that San Francisco loves dogs.
But the real question is: Do San Franciscans have more dogs or children?
If you’ve lived in San Francisco for more than a few months, you’ve probably heard the oft-repeated line: There are more dogs than children in San Francisco. But is it true?
Speculation is that there are less children in San Francisco than a typical city due to the many reasons it’s hard to raise them in the city. But it is also hard to have a dog in this city. So what is the answer…?
The Answer
The saying is true! There ARE more dogs than children in San Francisco.

Turns out that San Francisco is not dog crazy. It actually just doesn’t have very many children. San Francisco has the lowest percentage of children of any major city, according to past U.S. census data.
- About 18 percent of households in San Francisco have children under 19, whereas nationwide the average is 29.4 percent. You might think it has to do with city life, but that isn’t the case. In Los Angeles, 33.4 percent of households have children, and in New York City it’s 30.5 percent. The only other city where fewer than 20 percent of households have kids is Seattle.
- According to an American Community Survey a few years ago, Â there were about 115,000 children under 18 living in the city. At the same time, San Francisco Animal Care and Control estimated there were about 120,000 to 150,000 dogs in the city.
